Do I need to sign up for Making Tax Digital myself, or will HMRC sign me up automatically?

You need to sign up for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax yourself, or ask your accountant to do it for you. HMRC doesn’t move anyone over automatically, even if you’ve had a letter about MTD. You can sign up on GOV.UK. Once you’re signed up, you can start creating your digital records in EasyInvoice: as the PDF invoices you already send, or as simple entries if you don’t need an invoice.

Is a quarterly update a tax return, and do I have to pay tax when I send one?

No. A quarterly update is a running summary of your business income and expenses, not a tax return. Updates are cumulative: each one covers from the start of the tax year to the end of that quarter, so the first covers three months, the second six, and so on. Nothing is due when you send one. If you’d like to see where you stand, after an update you can request a tax estimate and view it in EasyInvoice on demand: a helpful preview of your tax so far, good for setting money aside, with nothing to pay. Your tax for the 2026/27 year is still worked out at the end of the year, with payment due by 31 January 2028, just like you’re used to.

What happens if I miss the 7 August 2026 deadline for my first quarterly update?

If you miss the 7 August 2026 deadline, HMRC won’t give you penalty points for a late quarterly update anywhere in the 2026/27 tax year. This first year is designed to let you get to know the process calmly. From the next tax year, penalties for late updates will apply, so making quarterly updates a habit now means no surprises later. It also doesn’t make MTD optional: you still need digital records and all four updates to complete your year-end return. If you’re behind, start now. Record your income and expenses from 6 April 2026 in EasyInvoice and send the update as soon as it’s ready.

Can I keep using my spreadsheet for MTD for Income Tax?

Not on its own. Once Making Tax Digital for Income Tax applies to you, your records must be kept digitally and your quarterly updates must go to HMRC through MTD-compatible software, and a spreadsheet can’t send anything by itself. Some people bolt separate bridging software onto their spreadsheet, but that means two tools and copying figures between them four times a year. EasyInvoice does both jobs in one app: the invoices you already send become your digital records, income without an invoice goes in as a simple entry, and the quarterly update goes to HMRC from the same place.

I have self-employment and rental income. Do I need two apps for MTD?

No, you don’t need two apps. EasyInvoice Premium supports multiple income sources, so you can keep digital records and send quarterly updates for your self-employment and your UK property income from one app. HMRC does expect a separate quarterly update for each income source, and EasyInvoice keeps the two apart for you.

Can my accountant do Making Tax Digital for me, or do I still need software?

Usually, yes. Under Making Tax Digital for Income Tax your day-to-day records must be kept digitally, and most sole traders keep those records themselves rather than send every receipt to their accountant. The good news: quarterly updates are the simple part. You add your invoices in EasyInvoice, which you were already doing for your business anyway, and four times a year you approve the update before it goes to HMRC. The end-of-year tax return, which many people find more complex, you can still leave to your accountant. One thing to know: your accountant can’t send your HMRC submissions for you through EasyInvoice. Filing on a client’s behalf runs through HMRC’s separate agent system, and EasyInvoice doesn’t support that yet.

How do I know HMRC has actually received my quarterly update?

When HMRC receives a quarterly update sent from EasyInvoice, the update shows as fulfilled in the app. That status comes back from HMRC itself, so you know HMRC has your update, not just that it was sent. You can also check your submitted updates in your HMRC online account.

What is the best MTD software for sole traders and landlords?

For a sole trader or landlord who already sends invoices, the best software for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is the one that turns those invoices into your digital records. In the right app, an invoice is an income record, so MTD adds almost no extra admin to your week. Beyond that, look for a few things: it should be HMRC-recognised, keep your records and send quarterly updates from the same app, handle more than one income source, such as self-employment plus UK property, and let you record income that doesn’t come from an invoice. Full accounting suites do far more than MTD asks of you, and free bridging tools usually cover only the bare submission. EasyInvoice Premium sits in the middle: HMRC-recognised, your invoices become your digital records, and income, expenses and quarterly updates live in one simple app for £89.99 a year, with a 14-day free trial that extends to 3 months free when you turn on MTD during it.
